The per-screen figure, and when it is real

The three amounts do not climb in a straight line, and the steps between them are not even either. One screen is $69. The second adds twenty-eight dollars, bringing two to $97. The third adds forty, bringing three to $137. What keeps falling all the way along is not the size of each step but the amount each screen costs you once the total is divided by the streams it carries.

The right-hand column is where the argument sits. One screen works out near $5.75 a month; divide the household plan across its three streams and each lands around $3.81 — a lower figure per screen than the smallest plan, for three times the concurrency. The catch is genuine and worth printing beside the number: that saving exists only if the third screen is actually switched on. Pay for three in a house that runs two and you have handed over $137 for what a $97 payment would have covered. The division rewards a busy household and quietly bills an optimistic one.

The evening this payment is really for

Take an ordinary Tuesday in a house of four. Live sport is on the main television downstairs. Upstairs a second screen has something gentle running while the youngest settles. In a third room somebody is halfway into a box set on a tablet. Three rooms, three streams, three unrelated things, and none of them interrupting any other because the slots happen to run out at exactly the right number.

That is the narrow problem the third slot solves — the peak, the single window in an evening when the whole house happens to want its own screen. A two-screen home meets that window and somebody waits. A three-screen home never notices it. In households where everybody keeps a different schedule, with different bedtimes and different tastes in different rooms, the third stream is what separates a plan that mostly works from one that always does.

The other side deserves equal space, because publishing the awkward part is the whole point of this site. If your genuine peak is two screens, and a third would sit dark five nights out of seven, the two-screen plan is the better payment and we would genuinely rather you made that one. Three earns its amount in a house that fills all three; in a quieter home it is money spent holding capacity in reserve, and reserve capacity is not something we will pretend you need.

Check the line before you check out

Three streams together is the heaviest load anything on this site places on a broadband line, which makes it the one thing genuinely worth measuring before money moves — a payment can be disputed, but a line that cannot carry three streams is not something any refund repairs. The rule does not change: roughly 15 Mbps per HD stream, roughly 25 Mbps per 4K stream, all three added together for the minute they coincide.

Around 55 Mbps handles three Ultra HD streams in most homes, which fibre and decent cable clear without noticing. That figure only bites at the peak, and most evenings at least one screen is paused or sitting in HD, so the real draw is lower than the table suggests. What usually gives way is not the line but the distribution. Three streams put the most weight on Wi-Fi, and a router that struggles to reach a back bedroom will stutter on the third screen well before the broadband itself runs short. Cabling the main television with ethernet and leaving Wi-Fi to the mobile screens fixes more than anything else does, and the setup guide works through it device by device. On fixed wireless or an older line, evening congestion is the genuine ceiling rather than the advertised number — so test at eight at night, not at eleven in the morning, and test before you pay rather than after.

What the household payment comes to where you are

• A second screen joins most nights. The shared television plus one personal screen — two screens at $97, which is where most orders land.
• All three fill at the peak. Separate rooms, separate tastes, same hour — this plan at $137, and the lowest figure per screen of the three.
